Complete Reinstall

I recently installed Windows 8 professional on my computer and installed Hyper-V on my machine, it works great and even better with dynamic memory. Now I have created a setup with few machines witch I will use for my new App-V 5.0 tutorial sessions. The only problem I have is the mic witch my daughter broke a few days ago, I need a new mic. Hopefully I will be able to start the project soon. I will post you guys when the first tutorial is available.

Just a tip

For those who have been using beta versions of App-V 5.0 and sequenced applications in that version, it seems that the packages does not work on App-V 5.0 final. You need to re-sequence the packages again, otherwise it will not work. Same for the Office 2013 preview package it did not work in my App-V 5.0 final setup.

My setup

I´ve been installing, configuring and testing App-V 5.0 Final version, but while trying to configure Windows 8 client machine it failed somehow I think it was something with my virtual machine. Well at least I will post the first video soon.

Keep an eye out

Because the App-V 5.0 has been released I will create tutorial videos on how to work with app-v 5.0 and also will be posting out tutorials on how to package some of 3rd party applications. Keep an eye out for my videos that will be posted soon. Notice that everything is created based on the newest Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 for testing purposes.

Released

App-V 5.0 has been released to the public, will be doing some tests and releasing new videos. Read the windows blog for more info http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/business/archive/2012/11/01/mdop-2012-now-available.aspx

Office 2013 Preview deployment

I just finished a tutorial on how to deploy Office 2013 preview through App-V 5.0 Beta 2.  There are two ways I do it, through the Management console and also through powershell using only a share name. I also show how to configure the clients PublishingServer settings. Hopefully you will learn something from my tutorials. By the way if you have any nice comments please reply to this blog, I always love when people are thankful of my tutorials, and I know I say a lot "here and so" in the videos. Go ahead and watch the tutorial and learn what you can. :)

All my tutorials are with subtitles, if you cannot hear or understand what I´m saying in the videos. I go through the subtitles and it takes as long as creating the video.

I really need a better computer

I´m getting frustrated here because my computer AMD with 12GB of ram is not sufficient running few vm machines. I really need a big computer, like 64GB ram, 2x cpu Intel Xenon 6 Core workstation with like 8x250GB some awesome SSD disks raided to more testing on windows, appv and lot of other microsoft product testing. When I reboot my computer and need to start few vm machines it takes about 25minutes to start. I know it is dreadfull and boring. I pray for a new computer soon, before I go crazy. Well at least one can dream... :)

Hmm.. this sounds nice

Application Virtualization 5.0 Beta 2 quick tutorial

I made a quick tutorial for App-V 5.0 Beta 2 on how to install the Management Server, Publishing Server and the new feature that has been enabled in beta 2 witch is the Reporting Server.  I did not go in depth on how to use the reporting server since I did not find any documentation about on how to use it, I will have to get back to you about that with another tutorial. So if you like to watch this tutorial you can see it on youtube or just click the play button bellow.

BTW, please feel free to post me if you have any comments about the videos or if you have any questions about the App-V product, I will do my best to answer all questions.

App-V 5.0 Beta 2 Released

So App-V Beta 2 was released few days ago, looking forward to test it.  I know that it is not possible to upgrade from beta 1 to beta 2, so you would need to uninstall appv management server, the appv client, appv server on sql and also you need to delete the database from sql management console. Hopefully it will resolve some of the bugs that are in beta 1.  I will post a tutorial on how to install App-V 5.0 Beta 2 soon and then we see what the difference is and the new features.
One of the features that where missing in Beta 1 was the time limit for applications, so you could publish application for certain time and it would delete it self on the client when the time is over, hopefully it will be in Beta 2.

I´m still on vacation, writing two books.  One children book and one about the subject of astral projection, you can check out my other blog witch contains my diaries. http://obediary.blogspot.com

Just a small joke - appv guy and cisco guy

As you know there are network guys and then there are the others, I heard a small joke about about cisco network guys.

A cisco guy and a appv guy went to a military school, when they got to the shooting training ground, they started shooting some marks a few meters away. The appv guy was very good and hit every time, but the cisco guy just did not hit anything. The appv guy said "why do you miss every time, it is so easy, maybe your gun is miscalibrated." The cisco network guy looked at his gun, pointed it at his finger and shot it of, then looked at the appv guy and said "It works at my end".

Had to share this one with you guys.

Summer Vacation

After long hours of work, study and testing, probably using 85% of my time sitting in front of a computer, it is time for a summer vacation.  I will be back posting blog articles and helping users those who are in need in App-V when I come back, energized and refreshed.

Windows 2012/8 will be RTM in august so I´m going to post a detailed howto tutorial on how to install App-V 5.0 on Windows 2012/8. I have a few projects that needs to be done for testing App-V 5.0, blogging and doing some how to and youtube tutorials.  Current projects that are in the works are

  • Checking out how to install App-V 5.0 on SQL with scripts. Hopefully I will finish this, scripts are not public.
  • Testing Windows 2012/8 DirectAccess with App-V 5.0
  • Writing a book "Quick guide to Powershell App-V 5.0 modules"

This summer I will be focusing on other stuff, currently writing a children´s book that will be published as multimedia ebook.

Happy summer vacation. :)

App-V 5.0 - Installing SQL Database - Part 1

I wonder what would the SQL guys say if I told them to install App-V 5.0 into the SQL servers, they would probably laugh at me.  I thought why would I install App-V 5.0 into the SQL database so I begun to research how to install the database with a simple script, in next part I will release a tutorial on how to install App-V SQL database with out installing the application.  That would make the SQL guys happy. Yeah... :)

App-V 5.0 - Trying to install server through CMD in quiet mode

I got a question from a guy named Stefan who was trying to install App-V 5.0 server through command line and he had some issues with it. I told him that I would check if I could try to install App-V 5.0 server through command line and here are the results (no tutorial).

The command line for the server setup is basically like this
  • /INSTALLDIR="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Application Virtualization Server"
  • /MANAGEMENT_SERVER
  • /DP_PREDEPLOY_MANAGEMENT
  • /PUBLISHING_SERVER
  • /MANAGEMENT_DB_SQLINSTANCE_USE_DEFAULT
  • /MANAGEMENT_DB_CUSTOM_SQLINSTANCE="MYSQLSERVER"
  • /MANAGEMENT_DB_NAME="AppVManagement"
  • /MANAGEMENT_SERVER_MACHINE_USE_LOCAL
  • /MANAGEMENT_REMOTE_SERVER_MACHINE_ACCOUNT="domain\alias"
  • /MANAGEMENT_SERVER_INSTALL_ADMIN_ACCOUNT="domain\alias"
  • /MANAGEMENT_WEBSITE_NAME="Microsoft App-V Management Service"
  • /MANAGEMENT_WEBSITE_PORT=82
  • /EXISTING_MANAGEMENT_DB_SQLSERVER_USE_LOCAL
  • /EXISTING_MANAGEMENT_DB_REMOTE_SQL_SERVER_NAME="RemoteSQLServerName"
  • /EXISTING_MANAGEMENT_DB_SQLINSTANCE_USE_DEFAULT
  • /EXISTING_MANAGEMENT_DB_NAME="AppVManagement"
  • /MANAGEMENT_ADMINACCOUNT="domain\alias"
  • /PUBLISHING_MGT_SERVER="http://appvserver:8081"

App-V 5.0 - App Connection Groups

I´ve created another tutorial for you guys witch I try to explain and show you how App Connection Groups work. I also show you the old "Microsoft Application Virtualization Dynamic Suite Composition Tool" (that is a long name for an application) and the difference between the old and the new method of allowing virtualized applications to speak to each other. In this tutorial I´m using virtualized Office 2010 and Xobni addon to the Outlook. So check it out and let me know what you think.

Sorry but I did not activate the windows and the 30 day trial expired, I also did not activated the Office 2010, I just added the license key to allow it to run. This environment was just basically created to create tutorials for you guys. But now I have Teched Professional subscription and I can use the keys to test and create more tutorial for you guys. I´m available to do custom tutorials if you guys like, I´m a specialist in other MS products to.

Windows Reimagined - Where does App-V fit in - Part 2 ?

I did not get any response from Senior Program Manager Lead Remote Desktop Protocol, but why did I ask him ? I was at the TechEd 2012 NA conference and met him so I decided to ask and he replied that I should send him an e-mail, so I sent him an e-mail on Monday last week but still no reply.  So I started to do some digging into App-V 5.0 + Remote Desktop in Windows Server 2012 and here are the final results.

Microsoft is doing a good job in creating all products powershell compatible, App-V 5.0 is well integrated to Windows Server 2012 if you add the specified cmdlets, then you can add the virtualized applications on RemoteApp using regular method as publishing applications.  If you check out the tutorial you can view how it is done.

The Cmdlets witch are used are these
import-module appvclient
Add-AppvClientPackage -Path "\\appvsrv\Content$\OpenOffice 3\OpenOffice 3.appv"
Publish-AppvClientPackage -Name "OpenOffice 3" -Global

Conlusion:
Yes, App-V 5.0 fits perfect in the new Windows Reimagined by using powershell commands. But if you have lot of Remote Desktop Services servers you would probably want to think about how you can publish the applications using powershell remotely or automatic.

Windows Reimagined - Where does App-V fit in - Part 1 ?

I have been here in Orlando Florida at TechEd and going to some sessions on how the next generation of OS will be like.  So I had some questions that I sent Senior Program Manager Lead Remote Desktop Protocol some questions about the app-v and remote desktop, those who have checked out one of my tutorials I checked out if it was possible to link App-V application to RemoteApp but did not succeed getting the virtualized app to work, well I did not spend much time making it work, so hopefully he will respond soon and I will do some tutorials if it is possible to do some app-v and remoteapp. Maybe if I will get the response that it is not possible, then I have an idea how it is possible, but to do that I need to do some programming :).

App-V 5.0 Beta Server Install Tutorial - Part 5 (Final)

So the final chapter in the App-V 5.0 Beta tutorial series is finished. I have been working hard to get this working and creating a great tutorial for you guys who are interested in virutalizing applications.  Hopefully many more will join the cause of virtualizing applications because it´s awsome. Microsoft Application Virtualization Developers are doing an awsome job in creating this Awsome product.  This part of the tutorial is about converting App-V 4.6 sequenced application witch is VLC Player to App-V 5.0 sequenced package, then we try to publish the package and run it succesfully on a client. Bellow the video is the list the Beta series.

App-V 5.0 Beta Tutorial Series
  1. Installing, Configuring and Managing App-V 5.0 Server
  2. Installing, Sequencing and Publishing App-V 5.0 Application
  3. Installing and Configuring App-V 5.0 Client on Windows 7
  4. Installing and Testing App-V 5.0 Client on Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012
  5. Testing, Converting and Publishing App-V 4.6 to App-V 5.0 Sequenced Package

Btw I´m going to Teched 2012 in Orlando Florida next week, hope I will meet someone who is interested in the my blog, it would be nice to chat with someone about it.

And you can check out my Youtube Playlist (Click Here to open playlist)

Application Virtualization 5.0 Beta Tutorial - Part 4

I have finished part 4 of the App-V 5.0 Beta tutorial series, I get a little bit confused about the part thing in the tutorial so don´t worry about that.  This tutorial is basicly about Installing App-V 5.0 Beta on Remote Desktop Services in Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 versions of the OS. There is a hopefull feature request I would like to make in App-V 5.0 final version is to allow RemoteApp sync or connect to App-V server so it would be possible to publish App-V 5.0 Sequenced applications through RemoteApp. Well check out the video.

I will post part 5 very soon :). How to convert App-V 4.6 sequenced applications to App-V 5.0 Beta

Working on Part 4 and 5 of the App-V 5.0 Beta series

I´m currently working on part 4 and 5 of the App-V 5.0 Beta tutorial series. Here is a sneek preview of what will be done in the next tutorials.

    • Test App-V 5.0 on Windows 2012 with Remote Desktop Services installed
  • Part 5
    • Convert old sequenced packages to new App-V 5.0 Packages
I´m done with part 4 but need to do some subtitles and stuff.  Currently I´m testing the conversion of old packages to the 5.0 version.  My next App-V 5.0 project will be very cool, looking forward to tell you guys about it.

Problems App-V Server 5.0 Beta

Yeah it has not been effortless to try to install App-V 5.0 Beta, I have been having some issues with it so I am going to post some of the error codes that I know that causes some issues and how to fix it. These errors are from the App-V client so you can view them in the Event Viewer under "Application and Services Logs->Microsoft->AppV->Client->Admin"

  • Operation attempted: RefreshPublishingServer. AppV Error Code: 0A00002EE2
    • Problem is with accessing from the client to the publishing server, you can test the connection by trying to telnet to the publishing server. Go to command prompt type in with out quotes "telnet PubServerIP portnumberYouHaveChoosen" or in my case "telnet 192.168.1.5 50537" if you cannot access it you need to open the port in the firewall on the publishing server.
  • Operation attempted: RefreshPublishingServer. AppV Error Code: 0A000001F4
    • This problem can because of HTTP 500 error, you can try to access the server by going to Internet Explorer and typing in the server name and the port such as "http://PubServerIP:PortNumber" or in my case "http://192.168.1.5:50537".  If you get an error 500 then maybe there is some problems with the appv setup.  So I have been doing some digging and found out that there are some bugs in App-V 5.0 by using the name of the management server in the setup of the publishing server, well at least if you are going to use the publishing server and the management server on the same server.  So there are two things you can do to fix this :
      • Edit the registry and change the settings for the management server and use the name of localhost such as "http://localhost:portnumber" or in my case "http://localhost:50536"
      • Remove and reinstall the App-V publishing server and set the name to  "http://localhost:portnumber" or in my case "http://localhost:50536" in the management field.
Proof of concept, I have sequenced firefox and OpenOffice 3 so here is a screenshot

The next thing I need to do is to fix the tutorial part 1 with the correct settings, plus commentary.  Then I´m going to finish the App-V client setup and configuration.

I will be posting in depth configuration for App-V 5.0 Beta, such as using powershell, registry hacks and lots more.

Application Virtualization 5.0 Beta Tutorial - Part 2

The second video part of the App-V 5.0 Beta is finished and you can view it on youtube. In this video I install Application Virtualization 5.0 Beta Sequencer, I also sequence OpenOffice 3. (Note OpenOffice 3 was just a random choice of application of many, I have never sequenced OpenOffice before).  As for this tutorials these are only beta tutorials and maybe when the finial version of App-V has been released I will publish recreate the tutorials, so it is good I get an feedback from you guys.  The video has commentary and also subtitles so you can understand me :).  Check out the video in HD.

My next video will be installing App-V 5.0 Beta Client on a Windows 7 machine and also how to import App-V Sequenced Packages into App-V 5.0 Beta Server.

APPVSRV witch is the Application Virtualization Server.

Check out my video and let me know what you think. Sorry but there is no commentary with the video, but only subtitles. Note you can view the video in HD.

My other project

Hi, I´m currently working another project witch I call www.GamerToPro.com witch is basically a blog where you can watch me turning from regular amature game player into professional game creator only using the internet as my source of knowledge.  I started out testing Game Maker Lite version and it was very nice and cool to use, but I needed a better product so I tested Unity3D and it rocks.  There are still some learning process going on so this project is going to take a long time, when I´m finished with the game I will create a tutorials, scripts in the learning center of the site witch you can watch how I did this.  I also have a video blog about this so you can watch me talk about game stuff.

It has been very hard the few past months because I have been working and working, and working late so there has been no time to blog or anything, I was going to create some App-V videos but the work and family had the priority.  I´m still going to post some tutorials on App-V and still wondering about the book.  I´m currently thinking about creating the App-V book in e-book format and sell it as a app on Ipad or maybe soon on Windows 8 Tablet hopefully.

See you soon, please check out my project at www.gamertopro.com
